Fresno, solidarity protest with Ferguson 11/25 at 6pm Eaton Plaza, Fresno
By now you have no doubt learned that the Grand Jury in Ferguson, MO has ruled there is no probable cause to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. This is a time of outrage and grief, of anger and of fear in our nation. As yesterday's shooting of Tamir Rice reminds us, this tragic waste of life happens all too often, with people of color consistently over-represented in police shootings across the country.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is famous for saying that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." On this day there can be no doubt that our community aligns with hearts and minds in Ferguson, MO and Cleveland, OH where the loss and pain are particularly sharp today. These events shine a spotlight on the disastrous consequences of prejudice and fear in our nation. As people of faith we insist that all lives matter. Black and brown lives matter. The hearts, souls, and spirits of all those impacted by racial violence in America matter - and that means that every one of us matters.
I want to invite you, as bearers of love and justice, to join us at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25th (tomorrow night) for an interfaith vigil at Eaton Plaza. 2400 Fresno Street, Fresno, CA 93721. Come stand on the side of love as we peacefully and prayerfully call for a renewed nationwide conversation on racial justice. Join us in honoring the lives lost, including those within our own city.
Be kind to yourself today and in the days to come. Acknowledge complex emotions as they arise, and hold fast to loved ones. May our church family be a place of comfort and support for us all.
