Early Voting for Fairfield Special Election to Start Thursday
FAIRFIELD The town is gearing up for a special election on Tuesday, Feb. 3 when current First Selectperson Christine Vitale, a Democrat, faces a challenge by Republican State Rep. Tony Hwang. Early voting will start on Thursday, Jan. 29.
It will be the first special election the town has held in nine years, according to Town Clerk Betsy Browne. Vitale became the first selectperson under unusual circumstances when First Selectman Bill Gerber died on July 15, 2025 only a few weeks after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Vitale was Gerbers running mate when he was elected in November 2023, and took over as outlined in the town charter when a first selectperson is not able to finish the term in office.
Vitale would have served out the remainder of Gerbers term, but in September, Fairfield Republicans launched a petition drive calling for a special election and endorsed Hwang as their candidate to challenge Vitale.
Currently, voter rolls in Fairfield list 41,219 active voters including 17,112 unaffiliated; 13,924 Democrats; 9,541 Republicans; and 642 listed as other, Browne said.
