Wilmington Housing Authority's new director was ousted from position in Nevada

In a private meeting on Monday, the Wilmington Housing Authority decided to hire a new executive director, a public housing veteran who comes to Delaware two years after being ousted from a Nevada housing authority amid accusations of gender discrimination and safety violations, among other issues.

The WHA board of commissioners discussed John Hill's hire Monday night during an executive session closed to the public. Board members then voted to hire Hill as the director in front of city residents without announcing who they were hiring, according to a meeting attendee. Commissioners Vincent White and James Spadola voted against Hill's hiring.

In a press release sent Tuesday morning, Board Chairman Steven Martin said Hill will bring "new ideas and new energy" to the Wilmington Housing Authority, which serves over 7,000 residents, about 10 percent of the city population.

“We feel John will be a competent and innovative director,” said Martin, who is also director of the Wilmington Housing Partnership. “He has a very good career record of focusing quickly on the particular needs of the individuals and the communities he has served."
