Christiana Care defrauded taxpayers with 'kickback scheme,' suit says

The former chief compliance officer at Christiana Care claims in a lawsuit the hospital network defrauded taxpayers through a "kickback scheme" in which it funneled Medicaid payments to independent doctors in exchange for patient referrals.

Ronald Sherman filed the False Claims Act lawsuit last year in U.S. District Court for Delaware.

Unsealed this summer, the suit claims that between 2010 and 2014 Christiana Care allowed doctors from the private practice, Neonatology Associates, to bill the federal government for care of critically ill newborns that actually had been provided by the hospital's own staff.

Christiana Care executives declined to be interviewed for this story. Sherman's attorney said he would officially serve the lawsuit to the hospital within the next week. Christiana Care then would have to formally respond.
