A woman delivered a baby boy on the platform at the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station Thursday morning, according to the transit agency. ... She was on a Green Line train heading toward Greenbelt shortly before 11 a.m. when her water broke, according to Metro spokeswoman Caroline Lukas.

There was an off-duty emergency medical technician on the same rail car, Lukas said, and that woman helped the mother off the train and onto the platform. Within minutes, a baby boy was delivered on a platform near the 7th Street exit.

The baby and the mother are both doing fine and have been taken to an area hospital, Lukas said.

In case you were wondering: No, it didn’t cost anything for the baby to leave the system. As Lori Aratani points out, children age four or younger can ride free.

I went through L'Enfant Plaza on a northbound Yellow Line train at 7:45 this morning. I could hardly imagine the commotion had this happened during rush hour.

Took my 2 week old thru there, on way from our apartment to my office at ICC (28 years ago!) P.S., was day after attending hearing on UP/MP/WP merger, which was part of my job at the time, mahat!
