Like so many others in the legal community, I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Judge Stephen Williams of the D.C. Circuit, an intellectual giant of the federal bench. May he rest in peace. #appellatetwitter

Longtime DC Circuit Judge Stephen Williams, Who Fought COVID-19, Dies at 83
"He had an uncommon love of ideas, an extraordinarily broad-ranging intellectual curiosity, an infectiously good-spirited demeanor, and a joyful sense of humor," D.C. Circuit Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan said. "We have been immeasurably enriched by the privilege of serving with him."

Senior Judge Stephen Williams, a long-standing and respected jurist on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit who was widely regarded as a giant of administrative law, has died of COVID-19, the courts chief executive confirmed Saturday. He was 83.
Williams, who died Friday night, was remembered in a statement Saturday by Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan as having committed his professional life to teaching, writing, and serving the public, including service on our court for more than three decades.
He had an uncommon love of ideas, an extraordinarily broad-ranging intellectual curiosity, an infectiously good-spirited demeanor, and a joyful sense of humor, Srinivasan said. We have been immeasurably enriched by the privilege of serving with him.
We will sorely miss our dear friend, and will long cherish fond memories of engaging with him on the work of the court, of sharing a smile with him about matters large and small, and of seeing him on his trademark bike rides to and from the courthouse, the chief judge continued. We extend our deepest condolences to Judge Williamss wife Faith and their children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Williams was appointed to the court by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 and took senior status in 2001. He continued to hear cases and issue opinions through the circuits previous term.

Had he already retired, or does this give Moscow Mitch another slot to fill?
