Very cool

Looking for a place to record a quick song or two, but don’t have the cash to pay for studio time? Your best bet could be the library.

Tucked away on the second floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library is a fully equipped recording studio, where anyone with a D.C. library card can record music, podcasts or whatever creative project they’re working on–and it’s completely free to use.

For nearly three years a recording studio has existed at the library’s teen space, but after an overwhelming demand for it, the library wanted to make it even bigger and more accessible to the public. “It was constantly booked. From that, we were able to use it as a test and realized we needed to go bigger with it,” said Maryann James-Daley, manager of The Labs at the D.C. Public Library. “It also limited the clientele, because it was in the teen center.”

The studio is a part of a larger A/V space called Studio Lab, which opened just a few months ago. There’s a digital production suite where you can record audio projects, a voiceover studio and a main production studio with a green screen for photo and video shoots. The library also has mixers, mics, keyboards, turntables, audio controllers, recorders, an electronic drumset, video cameras, tripods and more equipment that’s available to use. A portion of the gear was bought via a donation from Google, who gave $20,000 to the library.
