Tolson running for Ward 1 seat in Anniston municipal election

A 34-year-old educator and coach has entered the race for the Ward 1 seat on the Anniston City Council in the August 26 municipal election.

Brenton Tolson, a political newcomer, joins a competitive field that includes incumbent Lewis Downing, as well as challengers Ben New and John Squires. A lifelong Anniston resident, Tolson graduated from Anniston High School in 2009 and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, which he earned in 2014. He currently works as a teacher and coach at Saks High School, a job he has held for the past two years.

Tolson said his decision to run is rooted in a desire to provide leadership and serve as a positive example for the city’s youth.

“To change and better our city, our city's leadership, try to become a model in the Model City, a role model for our young kids and our people from Anniston that's never seen or never been or not educated to understand politics and things of that nature,” Tolson said. “So I just want to be a model to our kids coming up that shows that we can do whatever we want to do, as long as we put our mind to it and do our homework on what we need to do.”
