From guns to redistricting: Why this Florida legislative session feels different
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) House and Senate members returned to Tallahassee on Monday with medical freedom, immigration, and housing accessibility among the key bills up for debate. But Democrats say the tone at the Capitol has already grown tense, and its only week three.
House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell (D-Tampa) told 8 On Your Side that the session feels different from years past, with early warning signs of divisive bills and heavy debates already taking shape in the first few weeks.
Were used to the pomp and circumstance of the opening day of session, the State of the State address, Driskell said. What felt different was having such heavy bills up during the first week.
For Driskell, week one was atypical, as House members took up a number of controversial topics from gun reform to immigration, and wrongful death claims.
Already, it feels that things are a bit tense around here and its going to be interesting to see how the session proceeds, she said.
Adding to the pressure, Governor Ron DeSantis has signaled he may call lawmakers back for not one, but possibility two special sessions around redistricting and property taxes. Driskell criticized the move, saying its an insult to both the legislature and Floridians.
