April Freeman, Democratic candidate for FL 17th District seat, dies unexpectedly
SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - The Democratic candidate for the 17th District Congressional seat, April Freeman, has died. Her husband, David, posted about her passing on Facebook. Her cause of death was not released.
Freeman, a film and television producer who lives near Fort Myers, won the Democratic congressional primary and would have faced State Sen. Steube in November in the race for the 17th District Congressional seat being vacated by Tom Rooney.
According to Florida statute, it appears as though Steube will face a candidate named by a committee made up of all of the county chairs from the affected counties. The committee will need to name a nominee within five days to fill the vacancy. You can read the statute here.
Out-of-state voting ballots have already been mailed with April Freeman's name on them. It may also be difficult to change the name on the ballots for the race in November.
