FWIW, I've been watching Sumter County and there have been 17 deaths - and that number hasn't budged for weeks. I find that improbable. There are so many elderly residents in The Villages - I would think that number would rise (even slightly!).

I don't trust the information coming out of FL. What will become clear, is if the hospitals become overwhelmed. can't hide that

10. Watch the hospitalization rate....its the key indicator

To some degree the statement that more testing does mean more cases is true. But where the issue lies and the trend really matters is how many heads in beds with Covid are in our hospitals. Governor Newsome made a big show yesterday that while Covid hospitalizations are only using 8% of the CA hospital bed capacity they have some 50,000 surge beds available. That may be true but as a retired hospital administrator I will tell you something the Governor may be ignoring or uninformed about. While a hospital can turn on surplus patient rooms, the space is not the only key thing. We had surge space for an extra 100 rooms (we regularly used them for needed office space) but we didn't have the actual extra beds, we didn't have extra ICU ready staff, the rooms were below par for current ICU standards and didn't have the negative air flow you want to protect staff. And if you are already short of ventilators and PPE you are even in more dire straights. In short, you may get a room but your level of care may be far below the standard needed for optimal treatment. At some point this falls to a level called minimal crisis care and the outcomes are not good.

Knowing docs and nurses in a hospital setting well, while they are incredibly smart and capable people, they don't do well when the way they have to practice medicine is outside the norm. Having to perform when you are at high risk and underequipped is not something they do well for long. We are risking a mass mutiny and exodus from the hospital medical professionals by managing this so poorly. Politicians act like these people are soldiers and have to show up for a losing battle. They are not and it would be good if folks started to realize that when you show up with Covid or a stroke or a heart attack, you may be very disappointed.

12. The trend lines in a number of states are not just trending higher, they are going almost vertical..

...definitely cause for concern unless you are a Republican politician who figures that 100,000 or more get sick in my state...only 10,000 die...business will support me as long as I allow opening up and no one will remember at election day or really hold me accountable before then...so worth the trade off as long as the economy doesn't tank. This last part is where it gets sticky as people are not all stupid and many will stay home and not go out much and many businesses will still fail. And local and state government finances reliant on sales, income and property taxes will take a major hit requiring either massive public sector layoffs or major tax increases or a combination unless the Feds bail them out. And given this is not just a few months but likely a year or more, its a real thing. I would hate to be a governor of any stripe in this environment. All the choices have a serious bad side and there are no real wins in the near term.

And today, Saturday, we surpassed that! 9,585. My county of Brevard jumped 250, well over any previous day, and my zip code added 21 new cases (previous max was 9). Yeah, de Santis, keep making fun of Gov. Cuomo.

Florida’s Department of Health on Saturday confirmed 9,585 additional cases of COVID-19, surpassing Friday’s record-breaking 8,942 cases.

The new cases brings the state total of confirmed cases to 132, 545.

There were also 24 new deaths announced Saturday, bringing the statewide death toll to 3,390.
