Governor Duncan Mansion in Jacksonville being renovated

JACKSONVILLE — The Governor Duncan Mansion is seeing yet another renovation as the Governor Duncan Association and the Rev. James Caldwell chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution work to restore and preserve the building.

The three-story Jacksonville home served as the executive mansion during the term of Gov. Joseph Duncan, Illinois’ governor from 1834-1838. The home, which is now a historic site open for tours, has seen some major projects in recent years. The current fix is a renovation to the home’s porte cochere — similar to a modern carport — that connects to the home.

Mansion board member Sid Welles, the project coordinator, said work started about a year ago to restore the structure.

“It had to be stripped down and redone,” Welles said. “It was rebuilt as close to the original as possible.”
