Hotel Guest Arrested After Rifle, Ammunition Found in Room Overlooking Lake

A man was arrested on the Fourth of July after a hotel employee found guns and ammunition is his room overlooking Chicago's lakefront.

Keegan Casteel, 32, was arrested after a witness informed police that the man had a rifle inside a hotel room in the 600 block of N. Lake Shore Drive on Sunday evening, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department told Newsweek. "The offender was taken into custody without incident. A rifle and an additional firearm were recovered from the scene," the spokesman added.

Casteel, of Ankeny, Iowa, was charged with two felony charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, police said, adding that he doesn't possess a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card. The card is required to legally possess or purchase firearms or ammunition in Illinois.

According to WGN Investigates, the employee at the W Hotel discovered a .308 caliber rifle, a high-powered scope, a semi-automatic pistol and ammunition in Casteel's room.

High powered scope just thought about it that’s on lake shore itself which could make the lafefront a target and Navy Pier a big tourist spot too
Taste starts after the 4th for a week
About $250-300 a nite @W hotel at this time of year I knew someone who used to work there
I don’t care if it’s Akeny Iowa
Fuck that economic anxiety is the reason for violence bullshit too that’s a high end part of town
Maybe he just wanted to get out of town and spend some alone time with his guns and ammunition and show them a nice time

Edit to add Akeny Iowa

...like taking a rifle to a high rise hotel in an area where there's no hunting!
Instinct tells me that this guy wasn't planning anything productive.

They may well have nipped a national tragedy in the bud -- clearly this mo-fo had bad intentions...

when this was alerted upon by the employee in the room to when the hotel had him arrested
One wrong decision in that chain of staff to try to keep it quiet because it is a nice hotel (bad pr)
or stop it from going further to arrest because of a belief he should not be bothered as a guest (privacy)
and yes there would have been another mass shooting
Thank you all staff and W hotel

Just not bright enough to execute the plan, thank goodness. I wonder if the hotel employees got suspicious when they saw his luggage at check-in or if someone cleaning the room saw his stash.

by a good guy (or lady) WITHOUT a gun.

Kudos to the employee and management on nabbing this guy before something terrible happened.
