LaPorte County Fair begs forgiveness for $250K loan

LAPORTE — Officials with the LaPorte County Fair citing financial struggles are asking a $250,000 loan from county government be forgiven.

The 25-year loan was obtained in 2011 to install water and sewer lines at the fairgrounds previously served by well and septic.

Dennis Weiss, president of the LaPorte County Fair Association, and Rich Stalbrink, a former president of the group, made the request during a recent workshop of the LaPorte County Council.

They said revenues from the fair have been flat the past several years while expenses have gone up, and county government — which owns the property — has benefited from better facilities for other events besides the fair.
