2 Johnson County supervisors to run against each other

IOWA CITY — Two Johnson County supervisors — V Fixmer-Oraiz and Rod Sullivan — will face each other to vie for the same seat under a state law that requires the county to change the way supervisors are elected there.

The field was set by a Friday deadline for candidates to file election paperwork, a few months ahead of the June 2 primary election. All five seats on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors will be up for grabs this year after a change in state law passed last year that required the three Iowa counties that are home to regents university campuses — Johnson, Story and Black Hawk — to elect supervisors by districts within the county, rather than at-large, or countywide.

The district plan was developed by the state’s non-partisan Legislative Services Agency, and a random drawing was held in January to assign either a two- or four-year term to each district. All supervisor terms eventually will return to the full four years.

Johnson County voters will be able to vote for a single member of the board, based on where they live within the five districts.
