Prominent Democrats mulling governor's race in 2019

FRANKFORT — As Kentucky’s political world wonders whether Republican Gov. Matt Bevin will run for re-election in 2019, it is also watching to see what some Democrats will do.

If Bevin does run, it will be only the second time in modern Kentucky history that a Republican tries to defend the office from a Democratic challenge. In 2007, Steve Beshear defeated incumbent Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher, the only other Republican governor to hold office since the constitution was amended to allow governors to serve a second term.

House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins of Sandy Hook and Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes say they’re receiving encouragement from supporters and are at least considering the race. Former state Auditor Adam Edelen has said he’s thought about it, too.

Attorney General Andy Beshear, the son of Steve Beshear, is widely believed by people in both parties to be gearing up to run against Bevin with whom he’s waged ongoing constitutional battles in court but so far, Beshear has been coy about 2019.

He will also likely be the next governor, and that makes me sick. Andy Beshear would come closer to beating Comer than any of the others.
