BOSTON —The threat for rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday prompted the National Weather Service to issue flash flood watches for a broad area that includes Boston and areas south of the city.

The flash flood watch is in effect for Boston, the South Shore, southeastern Massachusetts, as well as Cape Cod.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms may contain torrential rain, which could result in localized flash flooding especially in urban centers.

The flash flood watch goes into effect for Barnstable, Bristol, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk counties Wednesday morning and will continue until Wednesday night.
