BOSTON —Crews spent Friday afternoon and evening making emergency repairs to an overpass along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston after a piece of debris broke away and fell onto a work site below.

Officials said a 2 foot by 3 foot piece of concrete broke away from the overpass and fell during the evening rush.

Incredibly the piece of concrete fell onto the work site between lanes on the Massachusetts Turnpike below, and not onto the roadway itself.

The surface of the 50-year-old bridge is a cracking, crumbling patchwork of fixes made over the years.

The bridges are so bad around here, its a disgrace.
