Queen Mary 2, Hermione visit Boston

3 notable ships visiting Boston this weekend

BOSTON — It's a maritime heritage weekend in Boston, with visits from three notable ships.

The Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 is celebrating Sunday's 175th anniversary of the British cruise line's first U.S. port of call. That was made by the Britannia in Boston in 1840. The QM2's captain threw out the first pitch at the Red Sox-Yankees game at Fenway Park. A fireworks display is planned Sunday night when the ship departs.

Also in Boston is the French sailing ship Hermione, a modern replica of the 18th century frigate that brought the Marquis de Lafayette and French aid during the Revolutionary War. The original Hermione arrived in 1780.

The Portuguese Navy's sail training barque Sagres is also visiting this weekend after an extended stay in New Bedford last week.
