The Michigan Senate on Wednesday approved legislation sponsored by Sen. John Moolenaar that would make it easier for an active duty armed service member to renew a concealed weapon permit.

“This is about fairness for the men and women of the armed forces who put their lives on the line to protect our country and our freedoms,” said Moolenaar, R-Midland. “Currently, a license to carry a concealed weapon in Michigan must be renewed in person. This can be extremely difficult – and sometimes impossible – for active duty military personnel stationed around the world. This bill would give those serving an efficient way to renew their licenses.”

Senate Bill 977 would allow an active duty military service member to renew a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) by mail.

Moolenaar’s legislation would only allow for the renewal of a CPL by mail and would not impact the procedure for obtaining the original CPL.
