Detroit Councilman Young II returns $1K campaign donation to avoid appearance of 'impropriety'

Detroit City Councilman Coleman A. Young II, who is running for re-election, has returned a $1,000 political donation from Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, a former state representative and current candidate to run the city's Office of the Ombudsman.

The city's Ombudsman position needs approval from two-thirds of the nine-member City Council, of which Young is currently a member at large. Gay-Dagnogo is one of 10 candidates being interviewed by the council for the 10-year-position, which has an annual salary of $195,000, according to city documents. The term of current Ombudsman Bruce Simpson ends in October.

Gay-Dagnogo said Wednesday that Young returned the donation because she is running for ombudsman and to make sure there "doesn't appear to be any impropriety or any challenges, or seen a different way."

"Because I made it to the second round (of the ombudsman hiring process) or whatever, just like, we don't want to have any impropriety or the appearance thereof, and so the donation was returned," she said.

Some of his administration did get charged, as I recall. No doubt that makes Coleman II very sensitive to appearances. I don’t blame him.
