MI-SD35: Michigan Senate Democratic leaders get involved in pivotal primary
Lansing Members of Michigan state Senate Democratic leadership have chosen a side in a primary race for a pivotal special election, according to a disclosure released Friday.
Fundraising committees tied to Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, D-Grand Rapids, Senate Majority Floor Leader Sam Singh, D-East Lansing, and Senate Democratic Campaign Chairman Darrin Camilleri, D-Trenton, combined to give nearly $70,000 to Saginaw Fire Captain Chedrick Greene over the last three months.
Greene is in a competitive race for the Democratic nomination in the 35th District special election against State Board of Education President Pamela Pugh of Saginaw. The primary election for the seat that represents Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties will take place on Feb. 3. The Democratic nominee will face the Republican nominee in a general election on May 5.
Committees tied to Brinks, the top Senate Democrat, gave $49,500 to Greene's campaign, the new disclosure showed. In a statement, Brinks touted the fact that Greene had received endorsements from labor groups and U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Bay City, who previously held the 35th District seat.
