Nessel launches ICE, fed action tracker as agency urges cooperation
Detroit Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Wednesday launched a "Federal Action Tracker" and encouraged residents to report any activity involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Border Patrol agencies Nessel accused of putting people in harm's way.
The development occurred as the Democratic second-term attorney general led a roundtable discussion of elected officials, social service agency representatives and others to air out complaints about ongoing federal deportation efforts and to discuss what they would do in hypothetical situations where they witnessed agents breaking the law.
"In Michigan, we do not and we will not tolerate illegal actions against our state residents, and I will not hesitate to uphold the law, and that includes me prosecuting unlawful actions perpetrated by federal officers," Nessel said during the discussion at the state's offices in Detroit's New Center area.
"Under (President Donald Trump), ICE and Border Patrol are not making our communities safer," she added. "Instead, they're creating a dangerous situation ... where residents of other states are teargassed, attacked and even killed for simply witnessing federal agents in action."
