MI-SD35: Firefighter (D), lawyer (R) advance in pivotal Michigan Senate race
Lansing A special election to decide whether Michigan Democrats keep their majority in the state Senate will focus on Democrat Chedrick Greene, a firefighter from Saginaw, and Republican Jason Tunney, a lawyer from Saginaw.
Democratic primary voters in the 35th District, which spans Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties, on Tuesday selected Greene as their nominee over State Board of Education President Pamela Pugh of Saginaw.
Greene, who got 60% of the vote in unofficial tallies, had been backed by the former senator, U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Bay City, and leaders of the Senate Democratic caucus.
Pugh, a progressive candidate who was endorsed by U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, won 28% of the vote. Other candidates got the remaining 12% of ballots cast.
