Oakland Co. school 1.5-mill hike plan is on track to make August ballot
Advocates for a property tax increase that would benefit all Oakland County school districts said they believe they have received enough support for the question to be posed to voters on the August election ballot, though at least one school board has rejected the plan.
The 1.5 mill "enhancement millage" would be added to the August ballot for all county voters after enough school boards representing a majority of the students in Oakland County pass a resolution in support of asking voters for the additional money.
Oakland Schools Superintendent Kenneth Gutman said he believes supporters have passed that threshold. School boards approving the resolution include those from Farmington, Southfield, Ferndale and Huron Valley, he said.
The additional six-year millage would generate $125 million more for schools across Michigan's wealthiest county, for an average of $728 per student the first year, and $782 a student the next five years. Every district would receive that amount multiplied by the number of students it has.
