No vote set for state worker reforms
LANSING With nine legislative days left this year, no vote has been scheduled on a controversial proposal to reform discipline policies for state employees, a spokesman for the state House speaker said.
With the clock ticking down on this legislative term, that proposal from Speaker Kevin Cotter, R-Mount Pleasant, is among dozens of still-pending bills that would affect state government employees. Some 14,000 such employees live and work in Greater Lansing.
The Legislature has scheduled three three-day work weeks before year's end, with the next session day scheduled for Nov. 29 and the last set for Dec. 15. Any bills that aren't acted on by then must be reintroduced when the 2017-18 term begins in January.
Several bills that would affect state employees have been stuck in committee for months, but lame-duck sessions are known for their unpredictability and for term-limited legislators trying to rush through their priorities before time runs out.
