Michigan man barred from going home for up to 9 years

BARAGA, Mich. - A Michigan man can’t go home again — maybe for as long as nine years.

The unusual restriction was upheld this week by a federal appeals court. When Eugene Rantanen is released from prison this year, he can’t step foot in his home county, Baraga County, while on probation.

Rantanen admits that Baraga in the Upper Peninsula isn’t a good place for him to deal with addiction problems. He doesn’t want to live there, but he objects to being banished for years.

Rantanen says he won’t be able to visit his elderly mother or attend funerals and family events. He’s a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

All of the folks I worked with, as a treatment provider, went back to whence they came - even when it made no sense. Most are back in prison, some dead.

Geography is not a cure, but it sure can help some people. If nothing else, it limits their 'people, places and things' at least in the short term, and for some - that's enough to establish a better path and a more competent routine.

IDK about 9 years or about a court order. I think it speaks to how frustrated people feel watching addicts make the same mistakes over and over.
