An opinion piece from The Collegian:

Elect Gretchen Whitmer: Michigan needs effective leadership

“The test of a civilization is the way it cares for its most vulnerable.” These words, written by novelist Pearl Buck, provide the ultimate lense through which we should view politics.

When evaluating candidates, the most important thing to look for is accountability. In some countries, politicians reflect the citizenry attitude; in the United States, however, our political system follows demands of the wealthy and politically engaged class. This aristocracy controls vast amounts of capital and have much to gain through influencing electoral politics, often at the expense of the most vulnerable. While no Michigan gubernatorial candidate completely reflects the public and their interests, Democratic candidate Gretchen Whitmer’s proposals offer more relief than Republican Bill Schuette’s.

If Schuette and the Republicans successfully defend right-to-work legislation, which bans certain union contracts, the woking class will continue to become more vulnerable. Wages among blue-collar workers will continue to fall as union strength does.

Unions have played a large part in American politics and the economy for over 100 years, and since their conception, establishment politicians have made an effort to undermine or destroy them. Right-to-work laws — adopted by 27 states, including Michigan — are just the latest attempt. But by now, it’s overwhelmingly clear that right-to-work results in lower pay across the board.

Ha: "The Collegian is Hillsdale College’s weekly student newspaper. The paper delivers local, campus, and national news that is written, photographed, and videoed by Hillsdale students. The Collegian is the oldest college newspaper in Michigan."

I'm sure Mr. Abbo ruffled quite a few feathers... this is Hillsdale, after all!

right wing college I’m Michigan. This is great.
I’ve spoke to Whitmer several times about making Michigan a Right-to-Vote State and she has agreed with me.

I remember this from last year:

Senate strikes tax exemption for college linked to Betsy DeVos

The Senate voted to strike an amendment from the Republican tax bill that would have benefited a small Christian college in southern Michigan with ties to education secretary Betsy DeVos.

In a surprise 52-48 vote, four Republicans supported an amendment offered by Democrat Jeff Merkley to remove the exception from the legislation. The decision came after Democrats raised the issue in a contentious exchange on the Senate floor.

Pennsylvania Republican senator Pat Toomey defended the provision, which would exempt Hillsdale College from an excise tax on universities and colleges with large endowments.

“I do understand that my colleagues on the far left do not have fond opinion of Hillsdale – but I do,” Toomey said. “I actually think it’s a wonderful institution.” He added that the university saves taxpayers a “tremendous amount of money” by refusing federal aid.

Hillsdale College is a conservative liberal arts college based in central Michigan that enrolls about 1,400 and focuses its curriculum around “western philosophical and theological inheritance”.

It was his assistant/daughter in law. She came to the local hospital made a fuss as George Roche Sr. was being treated because Mrs. Roche wanted her out of their house. Daughter in law ends up dead husband George Jr. is arrested. As is normal here local cops start covering stuff up allow him to stop at Burger king on way to jail. Has gunshot residue on him. Says he was shooting at schools gun range. State Police are called in after investigation they say evidence so tainted they can't tell what happened. Death of Daughter in law is called suicide. Subsequently it was discovered that it had been going on for like 16 years.
As an aside Law And Order did a takeoff on it. The College was Midvale. Hillsdale College hypocrisy has been a project of mine since I delivered papers on the Hill as a boy. This is just one example.
