Planned Westboro Baptist Church protest prompts closure of Flint high school
FLINT, MI - District officials have decided to close Flint Southwestern Classical Academy on Friday because of Westboro Baptist Church's plans to picket outside the West 12th Street building.
Derrick Lopez, superintendent of Flint Community Schools, said in a letter on Thursday, Oct. 4 that the high school will be closed tomorrow "for the protection of our students and district staff," the letter said.
"Their protests generally promote hate speech and intolerance," Lopez said. "Flint Community Schools strives to create a safe, warm and welcoming learning environment for our students and staff. While we respect the First Amendment rights of the organization to voice their beliefs, we do not support or in any way sanction the messages they have shared in the past.
"Why they have chosen to protest outside of one of our schools is unclear."
