Michigan Democrats introduce workers' rights bills amid UAW strike
Michigan Democrats unveiled legislation meant to build in more benefits for workers Monday, rolling out proposals that would codify additional protections for temporary workers and create new requirements for employee scheduling, severance pay and mandated time for meals.
The nine-bill package comes amid the United Auto Workers strike against General Motors - which began last week and is ongoing at GM plants across the country - and is part of a series of bills introduced by House Democrats this month aimed at improving workplace conditions.
Rep. Kara Hope, D-Holt, said during a Monday press conference in Lansing her Temporary Worker Bill of Rights legislation would get at one of the key issues at the heart of the UAW strike - giving temporary workers a first crack at permanent positions and affording them more stability and notice about when theyd be working.
One of the main sticking points with our union brothers and sisters down the street here is that temporary workers are not offered permanent positions when they become available, she said.
