Governor Rick Snyder failure to declare State of Emergency with Severe Ice Storm breaks precedent

"As families in Michigan continue to suffer impact from December 23 ice storm with up to six days and counting without power, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) has failed to follow Gubernatorial precedence set former Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) declaring county based States of Emergency."

Residents in Jackson, Lansing, Genesee, Delta, Clinton, Eaton and Shiwassee Counties lost power following ice storm affecting areas stretching from Michigan to Maine and parts of southern Ontario, Canada. According to estimates by DTE Energy and Lansing City Board of Light and Water at 4:20 pm Eastern Standard Time December 29, up to 3600 residents are still without power.

On December 27, Michigan State Police Capt. Chris Kelenske, deputy state director of emergency management and homeland security, told MLive reporter Dave Murray that natural disasters such as being without power in extended areas for multiple days are "local events".

"Disasters are first and foremost local events," Kelenske told MLive. "Most disasters are handled by local government with minimal or no state assistance."

On the county level, governmental officials in Delta, Clinton, Eaton and Shiwassee declared individual states' of emergency within hours after assessing the ice storm extended impact."

Read the article to find out how our Last Governor, Democrat Jennifer Granholm, responded to natural disasters. It was not in anyway the Nerd Style of doing business or showing concern for State Residents facing a crisis. Not at all!

I doubt they would be missing in action as Michiganders have been without power for a week. At the very least they would have issued a Press Release on the situation.

couple of hours, but significant parts of nearby Barry County were without power for over a week. The misery is now compounded with long term unemployment cutoff. I REALLY hope folks remember the betrayal next November.

Glad to hear your power was restored but you're correct, it should not take a week to restore power anywhere in Michigan. Considering the State of our State at the moment, let's hope People remember how they feel now or over the last three years, when entering polling locations next November.

If history has any barring, when Bush failed to act quickly enough to help Katrina victims, he never recovered his prior approval ratings. Although being without power for a week or more is not exactly on the same level as what residents of New Orleans experienced with Katrina, its' hard to believe these Michiganders will quickly forget or forgive a Governor who was AWOL on the job.

I think the big issue is the energy companies being more concerned with paying dividends to stock holders, instead of using that money to maintain tree lines and equipment. I had a power pole explode into fire, a few years ago. They told me it was because the 40+ year old porcelain insulators had never been checked for replacement. They were cracked, it rained, it froze and shattered. We were 14 hours waiting for them to replace the entire set up.

We had over half an inch of ice, and we just got power back on late last night. My kids and I had to move to my mom's house (taking the dog and then the cat) and only finally were able to return tonight.

I've been wondering why no state of emergency was declared. Yet another reason to get Snyder out of office.

And yes, a State of Emergency should've been declared. The sooner Snyder is sent back to his Ann Arbor McMansion and out of Lansing, the better.
