Interesting letter in the strib about the 5th District elections (from last week)

The narrow margin of Omar's win in the deep-blue Fifth District further shows the need to move away from partisan primaries. No matter who you supported, it's hard to argue that the November election shouldn't have been between Samuels, who garnered 55,217 votes, and Omar, with 57,683. Instead, Omar will face a Republican who garnered 4,765 votes. This effectively disenfranchises both Samuels voters, as well as independents and Republicans who won't be able to choose a viable candidate. We should all also stand up against a system where the victor is decided in a low-turnout August primary rather than the actual regular election. If you agree, please call your state legislators and demand nonpartisan primaries in Minnesota. Would Omar have won under this system? Maybe, but that's not the point. We all deserve a meaningful choice in November.

Perhaps the CA system, where there is one open primary and the two top votes getters than proceed to the general.

Well sure, that's what the supporter of a candidate who didn't get the endorsement would say. WhiskeyGrinder Aug 2022 #2

And the letter-writer's candidate took his message to the voters, and lost. It happens. WhiskeyGrinder Aug 2022 #4

Congressman Malinowski has given GOP voters and off ramp - to a Moderate Party.

Tom is a die hard Democratic Candidate, but Hunterdon County is deeply red. There are simply people who won't vote for the bad Tom (Kean Jr) but will never vote for a Democratic Candidate.

The formation of a Moderate Party and party line - gives a lot of non-Trumper Republicans out here an off ramp, and increases votes for Malinowski.

That all said - I'm with her. Congress Woman Omar. She's our Democratic Candidate and everyone out there needs to get out there and cast a vote for her.

on endorsements. Endorsements made by a handful of activists.

At least, recently we have seen candidates who chose to bypass endorsements, carrying their messaged to the voters and winning: Dayton, Walz and, no doubt more.
