State Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen (R-Glencoe) must apologize for the homophobic and racist comments he has made to the press and in the legislature. His statements don't reflect the views of Minnesotans. Ask him to either admit that his comments were wrong or resign from the legislature -- either say he's sorry or say good-bye.

He is a nutjob. Bluestem prairie has the low down on this wacko. Even Fox 9's Tom Lyden called him out

and I bet they just love him out there (or just don't pay enough attention).
My parents grew up in Renville County which is just west of McLeod and my folks never understood why the people out that way are so Republican. The smaller towns are all dying thanks to corporate farming and big box stores in towns like Hutchinson or Willmar. It's really sad, the town my Mom grew up in used to seem pretty lively when I was a kid - 3 grocery stores, a drug store, a Ben Franklin several gas stations and a couple car dealers.. Now it's like a ghost town on the rare occassions I'm out there.
None of those towns would have survived the Depression without the Democrats and they still haven't figured out who's trying to choke the life out of them because (in my best Marge from Fargo voice) "Ya know that Glenn, he's just a real good guy. Ja?"

(28,086 posts)(the hotel made it a convenient place) and I gather the casino is a major employer in the area. I talked to a dealer who commuted every day from Danube (about 30 miles) because it's the only job he could find. I can't imagine making that commute in the winter when it's snowing or just blowing.
Though, given that Jackpot is near Birch Coulee and the rest of the area where the 1862 Dakota War took place I do enjoy the historical irony of the Dakota now being a major employer in the area.

(3,655 posts)I'm not in his district but our rep isn't any better. She is another ALEC shill. I think Glencoe is still doing fairly well. They don't have a Walmart but they do have a Shopko. They have some manufacturing and the downtown stores haven't closed up yet.

(28,086 posts)Pop left in 1941 to join the Air Corp and Mom headed for the "big city" in 1942. Neither lived out there again (though they both now "reside" at St. John's in Hector). Hector was the town I had in mind in my post. My cousins and I used have a blast "uptown" on Friday nights when we were kids.
I still have relatives in Bird Island.

(1,660 posts)and well remember the Friday night drag up and down Main Street. I don't remember a Ben Franklin (that was in Olivia), but we had a Skogmos. One of the three grocery stores was owned by the lone Jewish family in town.
Mom was from Fairfax and my dad from Hector. I still have relatives in Hector, Buffalo Lake, Stewart, Fairfax and Bird Island.
