Why would anyone need to carry a weapon into the Capitol?

Apparently there has been a discussion about it.

I can see some people need to carry weapons to shoot someone else, to intimidate someone else, to, hopefully, be a (dead) hero when someone bursts into a movie theater and starts shooting.

But I would think that there is plenty of security around the Capitol so why there? What is so important about that?

There is no reason why anyone would need a gun for safety or self-defense in the state capitol, which has security. Carrying a gun where you don't need it for protection is only to make you feel important and powerful and maybe to intimidate others.

one of the gun nuts said that he had sat and listened to a lot of people talk about how they "felt" intimidated and that they should talk to a professional about these feelings they were having.

All I could think was that, had I been there, I would have been dragged out by security for screaming at the guy "maybe you should talk to your doctor about the little blue pill then you might not feel so inadequate."

Then there was another nut who said he had a "natural born right to carry a gun".

I can't think of once, in my whole life, where I was in a situation where I wished I had a gun. It must be awful to go through life so frightened all the time.

Was gratifying, at the Irish Fair couple of weeks ago at Harriett Island, to see signs prohibiting guns there.

I am ambivalent about CCW holders carrying at the capitol. It has been going on for ten years without incident. On the other hand, is it really necessary? Governor Dayton is not opposed to it so I guess I'll take his lead.

Then again, there is this:

regular people. They do intimidate. They give the "carrier" (implied) psychological control over everyone else there that is not carrying. I do not want to go somewhere where people are freely carrying them, having been held at gunpoint in my life. Just the fact that some are unable to stand up in opposition the those wanting to carry everywhere is proof enough of the aggression and control that these people have and the disregard for people like myself.
