North Kato break released 4.6 million gallons of raw sewage; state investigating
NORTH MANKATO A recent sewer line collapse near Highway 169 in North Mankato forced the city, for two days, to send 4.3 million gallons of raw sewage into an oxbow behind Hiniker Pond and then into the Minnesota River and to send a lesser amount into Spring Lake.
The state said it is investigating whether the large sewage spill was preventable.
The line collapsed near the Roadhouse 169 Bar & Grill early June 27. The problem affected about 25 homes and several businesses.
North Mankato City Administrator John Harrenstein said the city immediately contacted the duty officer at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency alerting them to the situation and informing them they would be bypassing sewage from the treatment plant.
