Ouch: Superwood plant to close in Duluth (140 jobs)

http://www.startribune.com/local/166892916.html
Georgia-Pacific says it will permanently close its plant in Duluth at the end of the month.

Notifications went to the 140 employees on Tuesday, and they will be paid for 60 days. The plant manufactures a hardboard product called Superwood that's used in the auto industry. Georgia-Pacific is shifting production to other facilities.

Company spokesman Eric Abercrombie says some equipment at the plant will be reallocated and some assets will be sold.

Rumored for years, and not a surprise that it finally happened. The company never put any maintenance into the plant; just ran it into the ground. But still...140 jobs hurts.

“No, we’re planning on coming back,” he said. “We’ve been doing this sort of thing for months.”

He said reports that the plant had ordered supplies for only the next 30 days was actually related to that temporary shutdown.

“We do this all the time,” he said.

Nobody has been laid off, and the company has no plans to lay off people, he said.

Could you imagine hearing that and breathing a sigh of relief only to find out you are out of a job 3 days later?
