MPR: Both amendments would pass if election were held today

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2012/09/11/politics/marriage-voter-id-amendments-poll/

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A new poll shows if the election were held today, constitutional amendments on marriage and voter ID would likely pass.

The latest KSTP/SurveyUSA poll found 50 percent of Minnesotans favor an amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Forty-three percent oppose the amendment, which would ban same-sex marriage in the Constitution, and 8 percent are undecided.

The other amendment on the November ballot has broader support. The poll found 62 percent of Minnesotans support the idea of requiring photo IDs to vote on Election Day, while 31 percent oppose. Just 7 percent are undecided.

The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.3 percent on the marriage question, and 4.1 percent on the voter ID amendment. The poll surveyed 551 likely Minnesota voters on both land lines and cell phones Sept. 6-9.

The marriage amendment is within reach, I think. I'm very discouraged about Voter ID, however.

If 43% oppose and 8% are undecided and choose not to vote on the amendment, they would lose. They need better than 50% of all votes cast to win. Not voting on the amendment counts as a no.

from what I have heard, the ballot measures will be on the backside of the ballot. Some people might skip it altogether. In 2010 many down ticket votes were skipped and that helped the GOP.

So, there are still a lot of people who simply have not tuned in to anything yet in regard to the November election. Lots will now start researching the actual amendments and see them for what they are. This is the time to work the votes, educate and fire up the voters.

I think it was PPP. 49-47 on the gay marriage issue. That one would fail as well.

The opposition will be rolling out their ads soon. According to all the lovely MN United volunteers I've spoken with, the ads were highly effective in all other states with similar amendments. Sadly, I think both will pass.
