Fascism in Dixie
The GOP super majority in Mississippi legislature just revoked "point of personal privilege" in the House. That means that state representatives cannot debate bills on the floor. They cannot speak for or against legislation before a Yes/No vote.
Speaker Philip Gunn has completely shut out Democratic dissent in the Legislature. Since most committees are chaired by Republicans and have GOP majority, Democrats have zero influence in the legislative body. They might as well stay home.
There is also a bill pending that targets school employees who engage in political activity. Superintendents and school board members may not support or oppose any political party at any time. This is in retaliation to a school funding initiative that was on the ballot back in November. The initiative failed but GOP wants to make sure that nobody tries it again.
There was a more draconian bill that would have fined teachers 10k for political activity at any time while they were on campus (including lunch breaks and planning periods). That bill failed in committee but it will probably pass next year. The failed bill would have fined teachers that self-identify as public school employees in advocacy groups or on social media.
