Legislators seek savings on state travel expenses

JACKSON – Legislators spent two days at the state Capitol hearing from state agencies about their travel expenses and looking for ways to curtail the amount of state funds spent on travel.

During the hearings, which began Monday, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves tweeted, “If we saved 10 percent (on travel) that’s $6 million that could be spent on priority items.”

The hearings are part of the effort of working groups formed by Reeves and House Speaker Philip Gunn, R-Clinton, to look at the state budgeting process and make recommendations to the full Legislature. In recent weeks, the working groups also have looked at agencies’ personnel and at the private sector contracts awarded by agencies.

During this week’s hearings, legislators discovered much of the travel is paid with federal funds and was mandatory in order to receive federal grants.
