Carterville voters to decide on sales tax increase on April 7th election
CARTERVILLE, Mo. (KOAM) Voters in Carterville will decide whether to approve a sales tax increase to accelerate road and sidewalk improvements when they head to the polls April 7th.
The proposed 1% sales tax increase, known as Proposition A, is expected to generate an estimated $200,000 annually for infrastructure projects. The revenue would fund paving, winter weather treatments and water main break repairs.
Currently, Carterville receives $65,000 per year from grant funding for road maintenance. City officials say this limited budget covers more than just paving.
"We have an annual budget of $65,000 per year for the roads now. And that's not for just for paving. That's for cold mix, that's for salt. Anything to be done with the roads, you'd have to do repairs, potholes, cut outs for, you know, when you have a main break," said Alan Griffin, Mayor of Carterville.
