At GOP dinner, Wilson says he'll counter left tilt of the Montana Supreme Court

GREAT FALLS — Montana Republicans need to counteract efforts by progressive groups to sway judicial elections, the state GOP chairman said last week, as a Flathead-area judge appears to be one of the party’s new standard bearers for renewed efforts to reshape the judicial branch.

Montana Supreme Court candidate Judge Dan Wilson got a thundering applause on Friday night at the Montana GOP Winter Kickoff, with the Flathead-area jurist calling himself a “constitutional conservative” as a contrast to judicial activism he said he sees on the current court.

“If you want to see a Supreme Court that allows politics to be where politics are supposed to be, in the legislature and in the executive, if you want to see the Supreme Court with straight answers and doesn’t backfill its opinions with the personal or political agenda of certain members of the court, I hope that you’ll consider supporting me a nonpartisan candidate for the Montana Supreme Court,” Wilson said Friday evening.

Filing for races begins on Feb. 17.
