Nebraska lawmaker to bring back call for convention of states

An effort to crack open the U.S. Constitution and install new restraints on the federal government will return to the Nebraska Legislature next year.

State Sen. Laura Ebke of Crete says she'll bring back a proposal for this state to join a call for a convention of states to consider constitutional amendments restricting federal spending and power, and limiting terms for federal officeholders.

At a simulated convention held in September, delegates proposed abolishing the federal income tax, requiring a supermajority of Congress to approve any new federal debt, and enabling one-quarter of either house of Congress to force a vote on any new federal regulation.

Supporters say a real convention of states — which would be a first in U.S. history — would provide a long-needed check on federal authority.
