Can N.J. Democrats unite to beat Christie on school funding?

TRENTON -- State Senate President Stephen Sweeney says New Jersey's current school funding formula has "fatal flaws," and he wants to fix it.

State Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto says that same formula is "unfair and unacceptable," and he, too, wants to fix it.

But with time running out before Republican Gov. Chris Christie's budget proposal next month, the leaders of the state's Democratic-controlled Legislature remain stuck in a tug-of-war over how to get started.

That delay, Sweeney worries, could leave the Legislature without a solid alternative if Christie tries to push through the drastic school funding overhaul he pitched in town hall meetings across the state last year, Sweeney said.
