Could a light rail connect Staten Island and Bayonne?

BAYONNE -- The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of New York will allocate $4 million to study the potential for a light rail that would connect to the Hudson-Bergen light rail in Bayonne, according to the Staten Island Advance.

The MTA, in its amended capital plan for 2015-2019, will look at the 13-mile route along Staten Island's West Shore for a potential light rail. The system would carry commuters over the Bayonne Bridge and connect them with New Jersey Transit's Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.

Mayor Jimmy Davis in a statement said that the city is "always interested in improvements to transportation in the region."

But Davis also raised questions as to whether the new Bayonne Bridge -- with its newly increased navigational clearance -- would be able to handle the weight of a light rail.
