Navy medical team heading to New Mexico to help with COVID

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The U.S. Navy is sending a 20-member medical team to New Mexico to help the San Juan Regional Medical Center cope with a staff shortage for treating large numbers of COVID-19 patients.

The military team is being deployed at the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and is scheduled to arrive at the Farmington hospital on Dec. 5.

The U.S. Army North says New Mexico is one of seven states where military teams are currently deployed or soon will. According to a U.S. Army North spokeswoman, Dr. Nicole Wieman, the teams focus on coronavirus cases and “they are there to decompress the burden of treating COVID patients.”

“We’re not following the guidelines anymore,” Dr. Wendy Johnson, chief medical officer at La Familia Medical Center in Santa Fe said of local residents.

Even with a comparatively high vaccination rate of 83 percent in Santa Fe County, that leaves 20,000 or more unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, Johnson said.

People gather now at birthday parties, theaters and other entertainment spots, she said, letting down their guard at a time when the disease’s intensity is picking up.

“Our restaurants are packed,” she said.

His wife also has it but she's at home. They were both vaccinated but started going all over without masks. He can't "breathe" with that thing over his nose. Bet he's having a harder time breathing now than when he wore a mask. I still wear my mask when I'm in any public place.
