Six Months After Sandy Hook, Cuomo Pushes Washington On Guns
Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement today, the six month anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, to push lawmakers in Washington to act on new gun control laws.
Across the nation, several states including New York overcame the outsized voices of the guardians of the status quo and passed common sense gun safety reform that bans lethal assault weapons and helps keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill, Cuomo said in the statement. Yet since Sandy Hook, another 4,000 people have died from gun violence, while Washington remains paralyzed. Today, I call on members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to renew their commitment to passing common sense gun control legislation because parents in this country shouldnt have to wait for the next tragedy for Washington to act.
Cuomo criticized Congressional leaders earlier this year when lawmakers in the Senate failed to approve a new law that would create tighter requirements for background checks.
In the wake of the Connecticut school shooting, Cuomo pushed through a sweeping gun control law the following month.
