NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Governors Island will reopen, and summer operating hours will begin at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, on Memorial Day Weekend.

Starting on May 24, the ferries to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty will depart Battery Park, as well as Liberty State Park in Jersey City, at 8:30 a.m. seven days a week, the National Park Service announced Thursday.

There will also be an extra departure from both locations at 5 p.m. each day.

The last boats back to Manhattan and Jersey City will depart at 6:45 p.m.

there is a group of people who either grew up on or at least spent some time living there that reunion together every year. They will be pleased to hear this.......They recently imploded an apartment building there that many of them lived in.

And a great view.

I think they use the island for FDNY testing now.

some lucky folks lived there whole childhoods there. They call themselves G.I. Brats Many of of them are still very close to each other. It was quite a unique experience being out there and being surrounded by NYC. There was a movie theater...large bowling alley which was also a big restaurant hang out for the teenagers. There were ball parks and indoor basketball courts...there was also a commisary for groceries and and exchange for other items...It was a world all of its own...
