Assembly En. Con. Committee passes bill to stop swan-killing plan

By MATTHEW L. McKIBBEN

Legislation that would protect swans from a state-mandated death sentence has passed the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee.

The bill (A.8790-a) would establish a moratorium on the Department of Environmental Conservation's plan to declare the birds a "prohibited invasive species" and eliminate the state's entire population by 2025.

According to the DEC, the mute swans create dangerous competition over food for non-invasive birds in the state. The swans are also aggressive protectors of their nests and produce fecal matter with high levels of E coli, making mute swans a danger to the public.
