Joe Pompeo
In an abrupt and unexpected move, The New York Times announced today that executive editor Jill Abramson will be leaving her position in the top masthead slot, to be replaced by her managing editor, Dean Baquet.
A full newsroom meeting was called immediately after the news went out around 2:30 this afternoon.
The paper's publisher, Times Company chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr., did not specify the reason precisely, but said it did not have to do with the business side. He characterized the change as having been prompted by management issues in the newsroom.
"And that's all I'm going to say about it," said Sulzberger, according to two sources who were present. "It was an issue of newsroom management."

Abramson was not at the meeting. She will not be continuing with the NY Times. While her statement is graceful, it must be a tough day for her.
I will be interested in hearing beyond "mangement of newsroom" issues.

(35,675 posts)there was a conflict between Abramson and Sulzberger and that Sulzberger decided to vanish his problem.
It's interesting that several editors spoke out on her behalf, or at least shared a concern about the impact of banishment.
I wonder what the conflict was over. It will probably be "leaked" soon!
I recently listened to former NY Times food editor Ruth Reichl's book "Sapphire and Garlic." It gave a bit of information on how things work at the Times. For example, the critic before her, upset over his loss of his power as a restaurant critic after Ruth took over the job, wrote regular letters to the powers that be at the Times about how RR was ruining the critic's position. Imagine! Reviewing ethnic restaurants! I guess he thought only French, Italian, and steakhouses deserved a visit by the NY Times critic.
She seemed to think the environs a bit dreary at The Gray Lady.

(35,675 posts)In this day and age, one would think there would be a degree of equality, but no....
I'm really disappointed.
At least she stood up for herself and got equal pay when she found out, but she should not have had to do that in the first place. And then in the end, it was for nothing.
