Bruno expects ‘what’s legally due’ for his defense

Jimmy Vielkind

ALBANY—Former Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno said he wants taxpayers to cover an estimated $4 million in legal bills he racked up defending himself from six years of federal prosecution.

A jury found Bruno not guilty on Friday.

The Public Officers Law says that any state officer is entitled to reimbursement for “reasonable” legal fees related to a charge or suit arising from someone's official actions. Bruno cited the case of Manfred Ohrenstein, a former Senate Democratic leader, who won reimbursement in the 1990s for a case that did not go to trial.

She wasn't surprised in the least that he was found 'not guilty', no matter how much evidence there might have been. (Not saying he's not 'not guilty', just that whether he was or not, he'd still be found not guilty anywhere around there.)
